This one is a little more preachy than normal – but the message is the same – the Standard American Diet (SAD) is outdated and causes the very problems that the creators of the original pyramid intended to fix. The original intent was to increase variety, albeit with inappropriate ratios, but this has lead to many misconceptions about what “normal” carbohydrate levels even look like in a diet. So a reality check for dietitians who say getting 40-50% of our calories from carbs is a “low-carb fad”, the real fad is high-carb, high-starch, low nutrient density trash food that has been a staple of American life for the last 50 years. All bodies are different but the major rules for nutrition and physiology are the same for us all.
