Rest Day Blog – Why Play? Sun 5-11-14

Why play?  Part of CrossFit’s prescription for world class fitness is to routinely try to play other sports that you are not necessarily gifted or experienced at.  Why is this important?  (Anyone who knows me will not find it surprising that:) There are mathematical and statistical models that explain why a bit of randomness actually benefits an organized system.  This is true for mechanical engines, for organisms, for political systems.  Note that I said “a bit” – meaning NOT chaos, but slight changes to the norm that shake the system into a better organization.  Think of a thermometer outside your house – have you ever, for no apparent reason, gone up and rapped it on the glass with your finger to try and get it to read correctly?  This is the instinctual method we use to shake the rust off and get to the truth and it works for fitness and life in general.  A well balanced life is able to accept and respond to changes and adapt quickly.  The segmented, specialized life is possibly very successful in one or two areas, but fails miserably when challenges outside of it’s realm of experience are encountered.  Part of what we do at CrossFit Manitowoc is pushing you outside your comfort zone every time you come in the box.  This is intentional and part of our prescription for how real, meaningful life change is manifested.  Get comfortable being uncomfortable and remember It doesn’t have to be fun to be fun!!!
