What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a constantly-varied, high-intensity, functional fitness program developed to maximize an individual’s ability to move large loads over long distances, in as short amount of time as possible. It is a program that develops general physical preparedness that is neither sport- nor skill-specific, but rather demands a high level of aptitude at all skills and prepares the individual for the unknown and unknowable challenges experienced in daily life.
Looking at sports and general physical tasks collectively, the CrossFit founders assembled a group of general physical skills and exercises that most universally lend themselves to developing a performance advantage. This large group of skills and exercises are grouped to create workouts (“WOD” or “Workout Of the Day”) in such variety that it approaches randomization, which over time mimics the naturally unpredictable nature of life. CrossFit is a ‘core’ strength and conditioning program in two ways. In the metaphorical sense, it prepares the athlete for unpredictable life events; it is essential, or ‘core’ to our existence. It is also a ‘core’ training program in the literal sense- being the center of something. Much of our work focuses on the major functional axis of the human body: the extension and flexion of the hips, trunk, and extremities while we control external objects relative to that ‘core’. Rather than isolating muscle groups and using many long-duration workouts, we train almost exclusively with compound joint movements in shorter, high-intensity cardio sessions.
Why is this method effective and efficient?
Compound joint movements in short, high intensity sessions are dramatically more effective at eliciting nearly every desired fitness result; whether it be strength, power, agility, coordination, speed, accuracy, balance, endurance, stamina, or flexibility. These results have been observed in elite athletes, weekend warriors, and couch potatoes alike. Personal observation also provides testimony to the fact that progress is a result of hard work, and while hard work can be both painful and intimidating, it always comes with a reward.
Is is for the average person?
Without a doubt, yes. The Olympic athlete and everyday person have needs differing in degree, not kind. The same methods that elicit optimal response in professional athletes will produce the same response in the elderly. The grandmother and Olympic sprinter will not squat the same weight, but they both need to squat. With careful and thorough coaching, CrossFit has been able to teach anyone who can care for themselves to safely perform the same fundamental movements used by professional coaches in elite environments. CrossFit is a program followed by many professional athletes, first-responders, and elite military units world-wide. As these high-achieving individuals provide credibility to the CrossFit program, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge that these same methods have been tested on the sedentary, overweight, pathological, and elderly- ultimately concluding that these special populations met the same success as those at the other end of the athletic spectrum. If the program works for Olympic Skiers as well as the overweight and sedentary, then it will work for you.
